[bnt interview] 'Crazy Dog' Yezi, "No Regrets"
[by Kim Yena, translated by Yoonjung Yi] Yezi, the fierce rapper that recently disclosed her single album ‘Crazy Dog’, was still cool and straightforward during the interview with bnt, as how she was in ‘Unpretty Rapstar 2’.
‘Crazy Dog’ was the hidden card that instantly made Yezi into the front-runner of Mnet’s hip-hop competition program ‘Unpretty Rapstar 2’, when she was about to be sent home. In order to give back to her fans, she reworked on ‘Crazy Dog’ with powerful brass, impressive 808 trap beat, and rapper San E’s featured rap in order to produce high-quality results.
“Rated-R ‘Crazy Dog’, Hope the listeners feel liberated”
Yezi seemed hyped up on the day of her single’s release. “I think the single placed 19th because it was Rated-R”. She laughed and added, “The censor silent effect always bothered me. Since a lot of people waited for it, I hope they feel liberated from listening to this non-censored track.”
One of the most interesting point is that Yezi did not consider the ‘Crazy Dog’ stage as dramatic. “When I was on stage, I wasn’t dramatic nor bold. Maybe I had the innate spite, but my only purpose was to show my raw side.”
“’Crazy Dog’ was written when I had something that made me furious. I was immediately drawn into the performance. Frankly, I could not remember the performance because I was so into it, but I knew that this will have strong pros and cons.
It has been 3 months since ‘Unpretty Rapstar 2’ aired its final episode. The biggest change for Yezi is the recognition. “Before the show, people were like ‘I think I saw her somewhere’, but now people recognize me immediately, even if I’m not wearing my performance clothes.” For Yezi, who was thirsty for public attention since she was a dancer, ‘Unpretty Rapstar 2’ was indeed a thankful program.
“I wanted to find myself and show myself clearly through ‘Unpretty Rapstar 2’. There wasn’t much chance that I could show my true self in a broadcasting show. So I thought once I’m in it, I’m in deep. ‘Unpretty Rapstar’ is the program that showed 22-year-old Yezi.
“I told the staffs that I will have fun during the interview prior to the show. In fact, I actually enjoyed ‘Unpretty Rapstar 2’ although there were a lot of harsh times. I was true to it every second of it. After it was all over, I told the staffs, ‘I had fun’.”
“Practice after practice, I did not want to regret“
Looking back to it, ‘Unpretty Rapstar 2’ was a stamina competition. The mental agony wasn’t a problem for her. Actually, she did not have the time to care about small details. By joining the show, there was no going back. Putting everything to the show was the obligation of entering a survival program. Therefore, she put everything into it for only one reason: to live a life without regrets.
Yezi is known for her high diligence while she practices. To Yezi, however, practice means throwing every bit of energy she has. “The reason I practice hard is because I don’t want to blame anyone else. If I make a mistake after doing everything I can, I’m going to think that is my limit. However, if I don’t practice much and have fun and then make a mistake, I’m going to regret it for life. I hated that. I don’t want to blame myself nor regret anything.”
“In the beginning of my debut, I had chubby face. But I lost a lot of weight after ‘Unpretty Rapstar 2’. First of all, I could not eat well. But it was not just me. Every competitor was like that. They were extremely stressed out and had gotten weak.”
“I wonder where my limits would be”
Eventually, it is a battle with oneself. Her thought of not wanting to regret was understandable, but also worrisome that she may be pushing herself too much. Then, she said, “I wonder where my limits would be.”
“Only staffs and contestants were allowed in the first shooting of the show. I felt uncomfortable spending time with these strangers for a long period. At that time, I suddenly felt the urge to break from my limits. Although my company colleagues were worried, I wanted to go through this well.”
“I could really expose my true self. I as well thought ‘Oh, I had that side of me?’ while I was monitoring the show. I found a lot of my faults that I never knew I had. Of course, I heard a lot of negative comments due to the editing issue. But I don’t want to blame the editing, because it was my action after all. I expected this anyway, so if something bothered me, I had to fix it and go on.”
‘Unpretty Rapstar 2’ Yezi was more sincere than anyone. Every emotion at all times was reflected on her facial expression, and she spoke up when she believed in it. She said that her biggest charm was her honesty.
“Being truthful and speaking bluntly are two different things. The reason that many people liked me is my sincerity. But I think it is wrong to force my honesty upon someone else. I want to keep being truthful to myself.”
“I think everyone has her own blade, and the only difference is how they express it. I was more bold and sharp than others in terms of expressing myself, but others have their own ways. Now I want to show the kinder side of me. But I will still remain frank.”
Yes, everyone has her own ‘blade’. To sharpen it or to make it dull depends on how each expresses it. But it doesn’t matter how one does it. Who cares? We just hope that each maintains her ‘blade’ for life without regret and lingering feelings. (photo by Loen Tree)
