Koreans Send the Biggest Support to Their Hero Yuna Kim
[by Cho Suyoun] The biggest interest that Koreans have this week is Yuna Kim, the all-time favorite figure star in Korea.
For Koreans, Yuna Kim has been ‘hope,’ ‘legend,’ ‘treasure’ and ‘hero.’ The first time this figure queen had received attention in Korea was 2009 when she won the first place at ISU World Championships. Until then, most of the Koreans did not have any knowledge in figure skating or in Yuna Kim.
Figure skating was a very rare sports category for Koreans because no one cut a conspicuous figure in Korea historically and was considered the Europeans’ exclusive sports.
The appearance of this figure star was absolutely breaking news for most Koreans and press that were looking for a new sports genius like Ji Sung Park and Chan Ho Park.
Since 2009, it was the era of Yuna Kim mostly. Foreign press typed out that she is a born genius that can appear once in a hundred years, and Kim started to win most of the contests.
Yet, the time Queen Yuna received the most attention was Vancouver Winter Olympic Games in 2010. Koreans and media were expecting a gold medal even before the game begun, giving her so much pressure, but Kim successfully ended the game without any flaw and received the highest score in women’s figure skating history.
When the game was over, Yuna could not stop crying on the ice as neither the skater nor Korean fans had expected such high score. Many Koreans showed their respects to her hard effort and Kim was considered like a legendary rock star ever since then.
The queen once considered retiring after achieving her dream of winning Olympic Games, but she had a second thought and decided to challenge the next Olympic Games, Sochi.
As it was reflected at 2013 Golden Spin of Zagreb and 2014 Korea Figure Championships, Yuna Kim is still at her best condition even after reaching her peak.
Including her Korean fans, people around the world are now showing great attention toward the possibility of another Olympic record. Nevertheless, Koreans’ best wish now toward queen Yuna is that she enjoys her last game of her career regardless of medal color. The defending Olympic champion will perform her short program on this Thursday and free skating on the next day at Sochi Olympics. (photo by bntnews DB)
