Health Threatening Smart Phones, What’s the Solution?


[by Cho Suyoun] The percentage of smart phone users have increased to the peak. According to a data collected in last June, Korea is the number one country to use smart phones all around the world.

As a result, the time that people spend on mobile and related consumption activity have increased notably. People who always bring smart phones with them when going out was about 63% and people who navigate on the Internet by using smart phones were 72%.

Just by looking around in metro, it is easy notice how many people are using smart phone devices. Most people bend their necks and stare at their phone screens. They rather shop, play games or chat than looking in the eyes of accompanying person.

However, excessive use of smart phone sends red light to one’s health. In fact, there are people who experience herniated cervical disc or inter-vertebral disc at young age because they often bend neck.

Herniated cervical disc not only causes pain on neck, but also causes shoulder pain and dry eye syndrome. When these symptoms come all at once, they cannot be treated so easily.

Since neck is the part that supports head, it requires extra careful control. If one stars into computer screen for a long time as well, there is no other way of avoiding cervical disc.

To avoid such case, there are several solutions. The quickest way could be not using smart phones or tablet PC, but if it is necessary, stretching once an hour is highly recommended.


Along with stretching, sleeping on functional pillow could help one free from cervical and intervertebral disc.
