The Next Winter Olympics Destination: Pyeongchang, Korea

[by Cho Suyoun] There are only three days left until the closing ceremony of Sochi Winter Olympic Games. Now that almost games are over, people wonder where the location of next Olympic Games is.

Well, the answer is Pyeongchang, Korea. Korea never became a host of Winter Olympic Games so the organizing committees put so much effort to bring the Olympics to Pyeongchang, the beautiful Iceland in Korea.

For the successful hosting, Ganwon-do, the province where Pyeongchang is located, is developing the surrounding areas and Olympic exclusive cultural and tourism industry.

This is the map that shows where each game will be played. The blue circle is Pyeongchang Alpensia zone. In this area, alpine skiing, cross country, ski jump, biathlon, bobsleigh, skeleton and luge will be played. The Alpensia zone was built around the Taebaek Mountains in alpine style so the altitude above sea level is 700m, which is the most suitable altitude for human beings.

The orange circle is Gangneung coastal zone. In this area, speed skating, figure skating, short track, ice hockey and curling will be played. The stadiums are currently under construction and the expected images of these arenas are as follows.

For those who visit Pyeongchang, there are much more to see than just games. First, there is Taebaek Mountains right in front of you. The mountains are also referred as the Alps in Korea so the snowscape in this area will absolutely steal their hearts.

Then there is beautiful Jungwol Temple in the city of Pyeongchang. For those who don’t have time to visit temples in Seoul, this will certainly give satisfaction. They will be surprised to see the beauty of chastity of this temple.

Then within a few kilometers, East Sea provides a magnificent view especially when the sun rises and sets. There are not many cities where mountains and ocean are located so nearby. A wide prospect will burst upon the view.

Another Alps reminding place in the next Olympic city is Great Mountains Sheep Ranch. As the ranch is located on the peak of the mountains, the breath-taking image of the Taebaek Mountains and boardwalk of the ranch will remind people of a picturesque.

Due to the geographic conditions, Pyeongchang was considered a periphery area, but is about to write a new history by hosting the 23rd Winter Olympic Games. The city has an excellent transportation infrastructure as every Olympic arenas are reachable within 30 minutes and smart weather system is constructed.

Lapland, Finland was once a desolate land but has become a world-famous winter sports touristic place. Will Pyeongchang become another Lapland? We will see in 2018. (photo by Pyeongchang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games)
